The Ultimate Checklist for First-Time Motorhome Renters in Australia

Renting a motorhome for the first time can feel both exciting and daunting. With the promise of freedom on the open road comes the need for preparation to ensure a smooth and enjoyable journey. Whether you’re exploring the coastlines, national parks, or bustling cities of Australia, this checklist will guide you through every step of the process.

1. Choose the Right Motorhome

Motorhomes come in various sizes and layouts. Consider the following factors:

  • Number of Travellers: A couple might prefer a 2-berth motorhome like our Cruisin’ Rover or the Cruisin’ Sandpiper. Families may need a 4- or 6-berth option such as the Cruisin’ Deluxe, the Cruisin’ Discovery or the Cruisin’ Adventurer.
  • Features: Cruisin’ Motorhomes offers vehicles with essentials like a fully-equipped kitchen, shower, and toilet. All these conveniences ensure your comfort on the road!
  • Driving Experience: All our vehicles are easy to drive, with Automatic Transmission. Larger motorhomes require more skill to manoeuvre and reverse, so choose one that matches your confidence level.

2.Book Early

Australia’s popularity as a motorhome travel destination means that vehicles can book out quickly, especially during peak seasons like summer and school holidays. Booking early ensures availability and better deals. Take advantage of our 5% Early Birds Discount by booking more than 125 days in advance! Plus, if you book for more than 21 days, you get an additional 10% with our Lond Hire Discount.

3.Our Liability Reduction Options

  • Standard Liability: Includes a $5,000 bond (or $3,000 for certain vehicles) with no cover for windscreen, tyres, overhead, underbody damage, or rollovers.
  • Liability Reduction: For $45/day, it eliminates the bond and reduces liability to zero, with a maximum amount payable of $1,450 or $2,250 depending on the vehicle.
  • Maximum Cover: For $55/day, it offers full coverage including windscreen, tyre, rollover cover, and extras like GPS and child seats.

We recommend choosing the Maximum Cover option for peace of mind during your journey. This comprehensive coverage protects you against unexpected costs, letting you focus on enjoying your motorhome adventure stress-free. Learn more about Liability Reduction options.

4. Understand Rental Terms and Conditions

Before signing a rental agreement, familiarise yourself with the following:

  • Terms and Conditions: Take time to read our Terms and Conditions to ensure you understand everything and know what to expect. And if you have any questions, have a look at our FAQs, or give us a call at 1300 664 485.
  • Kilometre Limits: There is no limit. You can go where the road takes you without any extra cost!
  • Road Restrictions: It is prohibited to drive on unsealed roads with our motorhomes.

5. Plan Your Itinerary

While spontaneity is part of the adventure, having a rough plan helps!

  • Highlight Must-See Destinations: Include iconic spots like the Great Ocean Road, famous for its stunning coastal views and the Twelve Apostles; Kakadu National Park known for its rich Aboriginal heritage and breathtaking landscapes; or Tasmania’s Cradle Mountain, perfect for nature enthusiasts and hikers.
  • Consider Seasonal Factors: Research the best times to visit certain regions. For example, Queensland is ideal during the winter months (June-August) to avoid the summer heat and humidity.
  • Powered Campsites: Our motorhomes will require powered sites to recharge batteries and access amenities. Use apps like WikiCamps or CamperMate to find powered campsites, free camping spots, and caravan parks. Many motorhome-friendly sites in Australia offer facilities like laundry, showers, and cooking areas.
  • Factor in Driving Times: Australia is vast, so avoid overloading your schedule with long drives. For example, driving from Sydney to Brisbane can take about 10 hours, so plan breaks and overnight stops in places like Coffs Harbour or Byron Bay. Make sure you read our Travel Information.
  • Research Local Activities: Look into unique experiences along your route, such as wine tasting in the Barossa Valley, snorkelling at Ningaloo Reef, or exploring the Daintree Rainforest.

  • Kitchen Supplies: We provide all the kitchenware that you may need during your travels. You only need to pack up your favourite food to cook delicious meals!

  • Personal Items: Don’t forget sunscreen, insect repellent, and a first-aid kit. As well as all your electronic gear and entertainment (books, card games…).

7. Motorhome Operation

Before hitting the road, a friendly staff member will explain everything you need to know about the motorhome and how it works. Get familiar with your motorhome’s:

  • Controls: Understand how to operate lights, air conditioning, and other features.
  • Water and Waste Systems: Know how to refill water tanks and empty waste responsibly.
  • Power Usage: Learn how to manage battery life and connect to powered sites.

8. Know the Rules of the Road

Australia has specific road rules that vary by state. Key points include:

  • Drive on the Left: Always drive on the left-hand side of the road.
  • Seatbelts: Ensure all passengers wear seatbelts at all times.
  • Mobile Phones: Use hands-free devices if you need to make calls while driving. Most of our vehicles have an inbuilt GPS, use it!
  • Speed Limits: Adhere to posted speed limits, which may change depending on the area (urban, rural, or school zones). Look out for signs indicating these limits. We recommend staying below 100km/h on the highway.
  • Wildlife Awareness: In rural areas, be cautious of animals like kangaroos or wombats crossing the road, particularly at dawn or dusk. For your safety and your passengers, you should NOT drive during the night.
  • Toll Roads: Some cities, like Sydney and Melbourne, have toll roads. Plan your route and arrange payment options in advance to avoid fines. Or set up your account with Linkt. Watch our short tutorial to help you set up!
  • Breakdowns and Emergencies: In case of a breakdown, use hazard lights and pull over safely. You will find on the back of your key tags our Roadside Assistance phone number, available 24/7.
